My story
I was born Victorio Jose Canales Jr. on March 19, 1969 in Fresno California to Socorro and Victor Canales. My mother was born in Mexico in the state of Durango. My father was born on a small farm in Fresno, Ca. (In fact, the farm was located on what you now know as Sunnyside High school. Weird huh?)
I attended Chester Rowell Elementary, Yosemite Middle School and Roosevelt High School, where I played baseball and football and later graduated in 1987. I also met my wife, Tina, at Roosevelt. We had the same math class together, and when I first saw her I knew she was the one I was going to marry.
I attended Fresno State and majored in many different areas. I knew I wanted to be a writer, and I loved to read, and I always knew I was going to become a teacher, and I did. I went back to Roosevelt and taught there from 1993 to 1999, coaching both baseball and football.
I was here at the beginning when Sunnyside opened. It was very exciting and I am happy that I became a Wildcat. This year I am teaching Seniors. I have three children: my daughter Marissa is a Sunnyside graduate, and is teaching middle school. My son Sonny also graduated from Sunnyside, and played on the Baseball and Football teams. He is a Fresno State graduate and is an accountant in San Jose. My baby Marisol is 9 years old. She is starting fourth grade this year. It is truly incredible to see a little human being grow and learn. She is beginning to learn to read; She loves Softball and her dog Mochi.

As I mentioned before, I am an avid reader. I also like to write, and I hope someday I will publish many books, maybe even some screenplays for the movies. I also enjoy fishing and being outdoors. I love sports. I have been a Forty-Niner/Giants fan all my life, and I am patiently waiting for the Niners to get back to the top again. (I hope I don’t wait too long).
One thing that I have learned in the last few years is that life is short. My father passed away 12 years ago to this day. I miss him everyday. I don’t have any major regrets, but I do wish sometimes that I spent more time with him. And that is my message to you. Life is short, too short to worry about things that we can’t control. We need to focus on the important things in life, because you never know what will happen. Things and people can be taken from us in a blink of an eye. So don’t be afraid to say things you feel, even if they are hard to get out. Don’t be afraid to do things because people are watching, take risks; find out what you are made of. I know I am sounding corny, but that’s what happens when you get to my age. And I will get kind of sappy every now and then.
Right now I am happy to be here starting a new year. It will be challenging, tough, fun, frustrating and many other things, but just remember—take care of business and hang in there.
